Marley and Me (2008)
Director: David Frankel
Rating: Rated PG for thematic material, some suggestive content and language.
Genre: Drama/Comedy
Main Cast: Owen Wilson as John Grogan, Jennifer Anniston as Jen Grogan, Eric Dane as Sebastian, 22 yellow labradors as Marley.
Based on the memoir of the same name, written by Josh Grogan, this book tells the story about a man and his dog. But it’s not just any other dog. This dog is “The World’s Worst Dog” according to John.
The movie begins with a newlywed couple, happy in love, starting their new life as a couple. A couple years later, both at the height of their career, John senses that Jen is contemplating motherhood. So his best friend, Sebastian suggests they get a dog for the time being.
Choosing Marley was easy but he was definitely what John and Jen call him, “The World’s Worst Dog”. Marley was unbelievably unruly, untrained, and in their words, “incorrigible”. He chewed anything he could find, ruined the walls and floors, afraid of thunder and ate like there was no tomorrow. As soon as they begin to start a family, they feel overwhelmed with it all.. including Marley.
This movie, despite a lot of bad reviews I’ve read, is a very realistic film that doesn’t need so much comedy (that’s what people complain most - not enough comedy). I feel the movie shows us the realistic side of how it is, settling down, starting a family and feel like the dream life you pictured is far from reach. Despite that, it shows you how John, Jen and Marley learn about love, growth, maturing and developing as a family.
I think it was a good movie and for those of you who would like a heart-warming family movie (no nudity or explicit language), you should give this movie a go. 7/10.
