Julia Roberts has taken on the best-selling memoir by Elizabeth Gilbert, Eat, Pray, Love and has begun to film the movie in New York City. Roberts will be portraying Elizabeth in the film.

Also on board for Eat, Pray Love are Billy Crudup as Steven, James Franco as David, Viola Davis as Delia and Javier Bardem as Felipe. Richard Jenkins will also be joining the cast of the movie. Ryan Murphy, creator of hit TV series Nip Tuck, writes the screenplay as well as directs.

Eat, Pray, Love  is a memoir written by Elizabeth Gilbert through her journey of finding a balance of pleasure and balance. At 32 years old, Gilbert was educated, had a home and a husband, and successful career as a writer. However, she was not happy; she was depressed with her marriage, often spending the night crying on her bathroom floor.

The movie is slated for a 2011 release and filming will take place in New York, Italy, India and Bali - where Gilbert spent a year long journey in pursuit of happiness.

The book received mixed reviews, some going as far as saying Gilbert’s journey was too fake - “too willed and too self-conscious”. However, Oprah only has high praises of the book and has even dedicated two entire episodes to the show and generating a huge fan base for Gilbert. Her book was well received by middle-aged women who feel they can relate and feel inspired by Gilbert’s risk taking.
